Technical development conference call, May 21, 2008
John Walsh, Michelle Dalmau, Wendell Piez, Julia Flanders held a conference call on technical development issues.
1. Check-in / progress report / current status
John will be meeting on 5/22/08 with Ashwini and new staff (SLIS student, Andrew Deluca)
The upcoming issue 2.1 will be published under cocoon, and back issues will be migrated at the same time
- need help from Amit to reroute the URL to the production server; talk to Amit about stats too
- need to set up Xubmit as version control; in the meantime, use subversion just for production XML; John and Michelle will get this set up if they have time
- continue to investigate password protection at the server-level (if not Tomcat, Apache). If not, client side or distribute development URL for author preview with caveat
Implementation of upgrades discussed last Fall
- new schema features: Michelle and John will review changes, upgrade old content, make sure publication workflow accommodates the new information.
- review scheme changes (primarily header, image display and linking), document/map any updates for data display; change log from Wendell will be helpful in the future
- RSS integration: basic RSS is working; for future, think about an easy interface for adding announcements; replace abstract with teaser?
- Web 2.0 features: John/Michelle have already integrated basic bookmarking/linksharing feature in the development interface, will check with Stefan about further options
2. Future planning
Searching and analysis
- Ashwini is now investigating search options under cocoon: Lucene
- It also makes sense to pull in Geoffrey Rockwell as well to consider integrating TAPoR toolbar: treat this essentially as setting up an "exploration" page: searching, analysis, etc.
Password protection for development server, for author access; this is lower short term priority, but useful
Blogging and commenting features
- our goal last fall was to find an XML friendly blog that could be easily integrated; Michelle did a review and ran the results by Matt; WordPress might be the best option (NB integrates well with Zotero)
- Michelle will explore the options further and circulate a draft to tech group and to Stefan.
- Wendell notes JSPWiki as another option; open framework for developing custom stuff. Ultimately Stefan needs to decide since he will be the major user; as long as the blog/commenting generates data in a tractable form, we can transform it and integrate it with the rest of the publication via cocoon.
- Also need to consider how to register and authenticate users; issue of moderating comments?
Migrating to TEI P5
- We agreed that this is a good next step; now is a good time since we have fairly small amount of existing content to migrate
- Over the summer: Julia and Wendell will create a test ODD for DHQ, circulate to the group for prodding and examination
- The metadata should be in our own namespace, mappable to TEI header
Next meeting: Wed 6/4/08 10:30
