This document contains notes towards a style guide for authors, to help them prepare word-processing documents that can be converted to DHQ markup with a minimum of work. As these notes are solidified they can be added to our Style Guide elsewhere on this wiki.
Formatting conventions
Quotations
use quotation marks (not italics) for inline quotations
follow each quotation by an inline citation (Authorname date, page) (Smith 1999, 24)
page number should be included for all quoted material
for quotations from born-digital materials that have no pagination, use section and paragraph numbering instead
Images and figures
for each figure, give the figure number followed by the filename of the image file for this figure: Figure 1 (image01.jpg)
do not embed images in the word-processing file; instead, separate image files should acccompany the submission. The file names for the image files should be consistently numbered to match the numbering of the figures: image01.jpg, image02.jpg, etc. Do not use descriptive names for the images (e.g. yellow_car.jpg).
if you do not own the image and fair use does not apply, you are responsible for getting permission to use the image.
Links and references to online materials
include a URL in square brackets for any reference to a web site or other online object that should be made a clickable link
if the URL itself is important or will be useful to readers, include the URL in the running prose (not in brackets)
