Memorandum of Understanding between Literary and Linguistic Computing (LLC) and Digital Humanities Quarterly (DHQ)

The development of a high-quality, open-access electronic journal for the digital humanities community is a key objective for ADHO. Among the goals for this journal is to make digital humanities scholarship more visible to a broad humanities readership outside the ADHO membership. At the same time, it is essential that such a journal complement ADHO's existing print journal rather than competing with it. The continuing success of LLC as the source of income for ADHO is essential to the organization and to DHQ. A successful strategy of cooperation for the two journals will result in increased membership in the constituent associations, increased quantity and variety of publication within the digital humanities community overall, and increased visibility to and interaction with the broader community of humanities researchers. This memorandum details a commitment on the part of the LLC and DHQ editors to collaborate on measures that will strengthen both journals, and benefit and expand their readerships.

The editors of DHQ and LLC therefore agree that:

  1. The relationship between the two journals will be cooperative rather than competitive. The editors of both journals will maintain regular communication with the aim of sharing information, exploring opportunities for mutually beneficial activities, and resolving potential concerns. Specifically, among other activities, the two journals will provide mutual advertising and will explore opportunities for co-publication of articles where the editors find this desirable.
  2. The editors will seek ways of taking advantage of the differences between the two journals that naturally arise from their different modes of publication to enhance the collaborative relationship between the two, for instance including joint and electronic publication of certain materials where appropriate.
  3. The editors will carry out a regular joint review of submissions and acceptances for both journals.
  4. Decisions within each journal about the editorial policies, review policies, and other journal policies will be strictly independent, although within the spirit of collaboration the Editors will attempt to ensure broad compatibility of policies and procedures.
  5. While each editorial team is expected to solicit submissions actively, no editors at either journal will attempt to solicit material away from the other journal, or to discourage authors from submitting to the other journal. All solicitations will be conducted in a collegial spirit.
  6. Editors may serve on both journals, as long as no conflict of interest arises. Conficts of interest will be addressed by the ADHO publications committee.
